What Is Collagen
Collagen is a key protein component of the skins structure and is largely responsible for its characteristic properties such as firmness and skin tone. Collagen fibers provide the matrix for elastin, which maintains skin elasticity trapping moisture and keeping skin hydrated. As we age from as early as our mid 20s, the number and activity of skin cells (fibroblasts) that produce collagen decreases. As these fibroblasts become less active, the collagen matrix looses firmness and the structure starts to collapse. Skin becomes dehydrated and thinner and fine lines and wrinkles start to appear.
